Plans, Notes, and Randomness

An update of where we are at, book related and otherwise.....

  • The final Big Book of the YEAR OF THE BIG BOOKtm has been decided. Starting on Oct 1st, Joe and I will begin reading Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. I bought my copy today, and will finish my Civil War trilogy by the end of September. That may be a stupid promise to make, but stupid promises are what we are all about here. The other 3 (2???...1????) members are welcome to read Pynchon with us, all we ask is that you finish it by the end of the year. BOOM executive decision made.
  • Just finished watching Dollhouse, Season One. I like Joss Whedon, though I do not consider myself a "Whedonite"...but damn, can he run a TV show. The first 5 or 6 episodes are kind of blah, but after that, it's awesome. Also, Alan Tudyk is great in everything that he does. Ever. I don't think I've watched him in anything and not liked him.
  • Midweek, I'm planning a post on a couple of books I've read (Washington, The Last Kind Words) and a movie that Joe made me watch. Spoiler alert, it's based off of a David Foster Wallace book. Because we don't talk about him enough on this blog, you know.
  • There might also be another post this weekend, Joe has an idea, we'll see where it goes.
  • Just an excerpt from the Civil War book...
The (confederate) Orleans Guard battalion, the elite organization....came into the battle wearing dress-blue uniforms, which drew the fire of the Confederates they were marching to support. Promptly they returned the volley, and when a horrified staff officer came galloping up to tell them they were shooting at friends: "I know it" the Creole colonel replied. "But dammit, sir, we fire on everybody who fires on us!"
Louisianians. They are a beautiful and crazy people, and you may defeat them, but you can never break them.

  2. Maybe write something else.... just a thought.

We are considering each naming 10 books that changed your life... if you have any you'd like to put forward, maybe we can make a list. Food for thought. Group project!
