I caught myself wondering why I want to read Chuck Palahniuk's new book about dildos so badly. Anyone who likes his work knows why. Here's a preview:
Well, I guess it's because I appreciate his particular brand of satire. Cynicism is a symptom of so many elements of the human condition, and I find that it is best handled with a sense of humor. Take, for example, John Oliver's (unfortunately correct) determination that we would only listen to US Supreme Court arguments if they were played by cute animals.
I've read eight books since I last posted, but the only book I can think about is the one I haven't even started yet (and... again... it's about dildos). I think it is because I will find myself laughing at his unique combination of titillation and dark, cynical humor. Palahniuk creates outrageous stories, but the complete impossibility of those stories serves his recipe and makes the point starkly. I suspect, based on the plot description (risky to rely on that... I realize), that Palahniuk is going to once again make me laugh at something cynical the same way John Oliver did.
If I do not laugh at these things, I cry. So, I look to authors like Palahniuk to turn my high blood pressure into belly laughs. Here's hoping he can do it again.
